The FOCAL SKILLS Approach

What is the International Center for FOCAL SKILLS?

The International Center for FOCAL SKILLS was created to provide information to educators about the FOCAL SKILLS Approach to language education. ICFS has served as a locus to coordinate communication among FOCAL SKILLS programs and to share information with other educators through this web site.

FOCAL SKILLS is a unique approach to language program design. It’s a set of well-researched ideas, principles, and techniques that you can use to revitalize your language program and energize your staff.

FOCAL SKILLS provides a complete roadmap to implement a program based on natural approaches to language instruction.

FOCAL SKILLS was developed in the 1980s and first implemented at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which continues to be the flagship program. It has also been adopted at a number of other colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad.

FOCAL SKILLS includes program design principles and specific guidelines, recommendations for teaching methodologies and materials, and a placement test system.
